This is a role playing game (RPG). I made it because like many people my age, I had a lot of fun in the 80s, 90s, and 00s playing RPGs, and I want to capture some of that magic again as a writer and referee. It is our goal with Otherwhere to develop a table-top roleplaying game that is simple and elegant at the outset, but contains sufficient complexity to engage more dedicated enthusiasts. It comes with certain central themes, to be sure, so wont appeal to everyone – if you aren’t fond of fantasy, then this may not appeal to you. However, the systems we use are portable, and the initial setting presented here is by no means the only setting in which Otherwhere may be played. We present a couple of notes regarding what an Otherwhere experience is designed to produce, but we cannot predict nor do we wish to foretell all the ways in which players may use the system. As stated above, it is designed to capture something reminiscent of a prior age of gaming, and the only measure of success for now is how well it does that. Beyond this, we encourage complexity and depth to whatever degree the players decide they want.
